In 1980, his portrayal of Howard Kirk in the TV mini-series The History Man was a popular success. His reputation as an exciting, multi-faceted and adventurous stage actor was confirmed when he portrayed Muhammad, the Arab businessman in Mike Leigh’s Goose Pimples (1981). The following year, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. His fool in King Lear (1982/3) was the first in a series of brilliant interpretations of Shakespearean roles. Among the others were the title role in Richard III (1984/5), for which he won a Olivier Award fo Best actor, and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (1987/8).

He has continued to work frequently with the RSC but has also been in several National Theatre productions, playing the title role in The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui (1991), Astrov in Uncle Vanya (1992), the title role in Titus Andronicus (1995), and the title role in Stanley (1996), for which he won his second Olivier Award.
