Biography
Elspeth March (1911-1999) made her professional debut in Jonah and the Whale at London’s Westminster Theatre in 1932. Good-looking and talented, she was soon regarded as an actress with real potential. Before her career had really taken off, she met a handsome actor who, before they married in 1928, had appeared uncredited in five films. He was Stewart Granger. She became the mother of his first two children. Before the Second World War ended, he had become an overnight star in Britain for his performance in The Man in Grey (1943). As his film career blossomed, the marriage faltered. The couple divorced in 1948.
Elspeth March resumed her acting career in 1944 and, from then until she was in her 80s, she continued to find strong supporting roles in plays, films and TV drama. In 1977 she went to the National Theatre, appearing in The Madras House and Don Juan Comes Back from the War. Her films include Goodbye Mr Chips (1969). She was the voice of Tomasina in Disney’s The Three Lives of Tomasina.
