Biography
Ethel Irving (1869-1963), whose real name was Frances Emily Irving, was the daughter of an actor. (She was not related to Henry Irving, who was born John Henry Brodribb and adopted the surname ‘Irving’.)
Early in her career, she appeared in music halls but she quickly became a popular star of musical comedies. In 1902, she created, at Daly’s Theatre, the part of Sophie in A Country Girl. Another important role she played was Pamela Tuckwell in What Pamela Wanted at the Criterion Theatre (1905). Such was her popularity that not only were thousands of postcards of her bought, but a waltz was named after her. In 1912, she starred with Sir George Alexander in The Turning Point.
In 1916, she took her own company on a tour of South Africa. After the war, she continued performing and had a success with La Tosca that, in 1920, was presented in London and on tour. She appeared in a handful of films; most notably in the title role of the musical comedy Call me Mame (1933).
