Biography
Gertrude Elliott (1874-1950), the American actress, was the elder sister of Maxine Elliott. She made her New York stage debut in 1894. From 1897 to 1899, she appeared with Nat Goodwin’s company. Later in 1899, she went to London to play Midge in The Cowboy and the Lady. She stayed on to play Ophelia to the Hamlet of Johnston Forbes-Robertson (1853-1937). In 1900, the couple were married.

From that time on, she often appeared with her husband as his leading lady, both in the USA and in Britain. Their Broadway performances included The Light that Failed (1903), Hamlet (1904) and the premiere of Bernard Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra (1906).

In 1913, her husband, in the year that he retired, was knighted and so she became Lady Forbes-Robertson. In 1918, she briefly took over the management of the St. James’s Theatre in London, successfully presenting The Eyes of Youth that ran 383 performances.
