Biography
Sir John Clements (1910-1989) was a distinguished British actor, theatre manager, director and writer. In 1930, he made his stage debut in Out of the Blue at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. He then spent some years touring with Ben Greet's Company. In 1935, he founded Intimate Theatre in Palmer's Green, London, and organized weekly Rep until 1941. During the war, he worked with ENSA and later with the Old Vic Company at the New Theatre.
Although primarily a stage actor, he appeared in some 25 films, most memorably as the young British officer whose three fellow officers and his fiancée brand him as coward in Korda's The Four Feathers (1939). He also appeared General von Moltke in Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) and as the Advocate General in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1982).
In 1955, he was appointed Advisor on Drama to Associated Rediffusion Ltd and onto the Board of Directors of the Saville Theatre. In 1965, he became Director of the Chichester Festival. He was knighted in 1968.
