Biography
Maureen Stapleton (born 1925) trained with Herbert Berghof in New York where she made her Broadway debut in Burgess Meredith's production of The Playboy of the Western World (1946). For her performance as the emotional widow, Serafina, in Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo (1951), she won a Tony Award and achieved stardom. Her subsequent impressive performances included Lady Torrence in Orpheus Descending (1957), Carrie Berniers in Toys in the Attic (1960), three characters in Plaza Suite (1968) and Amanda in The Glass Menagerie (1965). In 1971, she received her second Tony for her portrayal of Eva Mears, the alcoholic singer, in Neil Simon's The Gingerbread Lady.
In addition to her stage work, Maureen Stapleton has had a very successful film career. She received a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her very first film role in Lonelyhearts (1958) and further nominations for her performances in Airport (1970) and Woody Allen's Interiors (1978). She won an Oscar in 1981 for her portrayal of Emma Goldman in Warren Beatty's Reds (1981). Her other memorable films include The Fugitive Kind (1959), A View From the Bridge (1962) and Neil Simon's Plaza Suite (1971). She has also appeared in many TV dramas and received an Emmy for Among the Paths to Eden (1967). In 1975, she received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Spoken Word category for her recording of To Kill a Mockingbird.
A consistently high-performer with a remarkable stage presence and a rich and varied voice, Maureen Stapleton is truly an acting legend.
