| George BARKER - Hand-written, signed letter George Barker eft school at 14 and worked at a variety of jobs before the publication, in 1933, of his novel Alanna Autumnal and Thirty Preliminary Poems. His poetry, noted for it vivid imagery, became, for a while, very popular - especially his long poem 'Calamiterrot' (1937) which was inspired by the Spanish Civil War. It was about this time that he embarked on his intense and tragic love affair with Elizabeth Smart. His 'Collected Poems' was published in 1987. He died in straightened circumstances in 1991. The letter, on the notepaper of the University of Wisconsin, is dated December 8, (1970). 1 page, written on 1 side only. SHOW FULL DETAILS |
